Indian squad for World Cup 2019 was announced at a press conference in Mumbai on 15th April 2019 (Monday). This was followed by a meeting between the five-man national selection committee led by MSK Prasad, Indian captain Virat Kohli and chief coach Ravi Shastri at the BCCI Cricket Centre in Mumbai. It was being speculated that India will stick to the ODI squad they have fielded over the recent few months -- against the ODI series VS. Australia and New Zealand -- but there were surprise inclusions made. The big question mark was over the No.4 spot in the batting order. Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli were always the first picks for the top three spots. KL Rahul was likely to be included as the back-up opener. Ambati Rayudu, who had been India's No.4 since last year's Asia Cup, had an unresponsive Australia series and he was also unable to set the IPL on fire either. Rayudu's highest score in the Australia series was 18. Even against New Zealand in January, he only managed one 50+ score. Rayudu's form opened the door for many more names to be up for discussion. Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar were likely to be the main contenders to replace Rayudu and the selectors made the right choice and went ahead with both of them.
With the mixture of young and experienced players in the team, it would be difficult for Captain Kohli to rotate players on a more often basis. Virat would get the expert aid from behind the stumps, MSD has been an integral part of the team since ages and with probably his last world cup he would place all his pieces on the line. The combo of Virat and MSD would ensure a great environment in the team, both on and off the field.
With the best top three in the world, Indian team would expect a fiery start, players like DK and Kedar will provide the support in the middle order and with the expertise and calmness of MSD lower middle order would also be consolidated, the fire power of all-rounders like Hardik and Jadeja might also get some vital runs at the end of the innings and they could also come in handy with few overs under their hat. Bowlers have already performed well in the recent series, they just have to mark a few ticks on the check list which includes death bowling, use of bouncers and other variations and then the team would have the potential to defeat any opponent.
Bumrah would be the pick in the bowlers and most of the eyes would be turned on him because of his death bowling and the ability to pick few wickets in the middle overs. Bumrah would be assisted by his partners in crime Shami and Bhuvi, both the spinners Kuldeep and Chahal would also like to pick few scalps in the middle overs and help the team in pushing the opponents on back foot.
