Met Gala 2019 – All You Need To Know

The Met Gala, formally known as the Costume Institute Gala and also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. This event marks the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibit. Each year's event celebrates the theme of that particular year's Costume Institute exhibition, and the exhibition sets the tone for the formal dress of the night, since guests are expected to choose their fashion to match the theme of the exhibit.

Here are few insights on various factors of the star studded Met gala:

The Theme

The theme of Met gala 2019 costume exhibition was “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, if you think of camp as sleeping bags and tents then you might be wrong, but here camp means exaggerated fashion. The exhibit was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay that defined camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

Camp fashion could be hilarious, incongruous or in simple words, extreme in its own nature, and the red carpet witnessed a lot of celebrities, slaying their outfits on the carpet with full confidence.

The Hosts

The gala was co-hosted by two campy fashionistas: Lady Gaga and Harry Styles. The entire event of Met gala 2019 was sponsored by Gucci. Gucci’s Alessandro Michelle along with tennis star player Serena Williams joined the two pop-stars as co-hosts of the 2019 version of the event.

The Exhibition

The exhibition featured both Men’s and women’s wear, the Mets’ “Camp: Notes on Fashion” exhibition featured over 200 pieces of fashion, along with sculptures, paintings and drawings from the 17th century through today. The creations of designers from Virgil Abloh to Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Rei Kawakubo, Mugler, Bob Mackie, Karl Lagerfeld, and more, were featured in the exhibit. Fresh off the Couture Week runways, the Viktor & Rolf slogan couture gowns that flashed an endless stream of memes was also on the display for the fashion lovers.

A large part of the exposition did explored about, how irony, humor, parody, theatricality, and overstatement are expressed in fashion. Other sections highlighted Versailles along with surprising subcultures of Europe and America dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Andrew Bolton, Costume Institute curator, told that, people nowadays are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but could actually be a very classy and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures.

The Committee

The Hollywood reporter had previously revealed the high-profile committee for this year’s Met gala. Last night the event witnessed loads of Hollywood names, which included: Bradley Cooper, Jared Leto, Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez, and Lena Waithe.
